This is, Jeff WD4ET in Crosby, TX.

I'm just an old retired guy. I have been a licensed HAM radio operator since the late sixties. My favorite mode of operation is HF QRP, mostly on 40 and 20 meters. There is so much new to enhance my radio hobby. These days digital modes are in vogue again. Not just packet (AX.25 and APRS) but C4FM, Wires-X, DMR, and D-Star. I am currently trying to figure out how to connect Winlink via HF with a SignalLink USB. I am also working all of the modes with a SharkRF OpenSpot 4 Pro. I have been able to login to the Texas Patriots Digital net. They are a great group and have a very nice digital net on Monday nights at 7:00 PM.

Howdy, I'm old but not retired yet and probably never will. HAM radio operator since 2018 but just technician level. I'm more interested in what's happening around Houston than around the world. I'm a Red Cross shelter volunteer who has been deployed to three hurricanes, including Harvey. Communication with the Red Cross command got cut off during Harvey, which was the main reason I finally got my ticket. I have a Toyota SUV that is my mobile man cave/ham shack/overlanding vehicle that has a 100 watt solar panel mounted on the roof to charge a second, deep cycle battery to run my radios (and fridge!). Tinkering with this SUV, adding new gadgets and electronics, is one of my great joys!

Hi Mark,

Sounds like your SUV is a great setup. I would like to see it sometime at a meetup.

Your experience proves that HAM radio is still an asset during major events like hurricanes. I worked with the Red Cross back Florida. We had a radio room setup and ready to go at Red Cross Headquarters in Jacksonville, FL. During hurricanes we had an amateur stationed at RC HQ, the EOC, the larger shelters and a couple of the major hospitals.

Thank you for sharing, Jeff
